In the fourth installment of our Headfirst Alumni Spotlight series we thought it was only fitting to turn our attention to a few Headfirst alumni currently playing key roles in the Davidson Wildcats’ historical run through the NCAA tournament.
Davidson and its 15 Headfirst alumni will continue their Cinderella story at the Texas A&M Super-Regional this weekend after knocking off national two-seed UNC and winning the Chapel Hill Regional. With some of the most competitive admission standards of any Division I school, the Wildcats success proves that pursuing a top degree and a College World Series berth are not mutually exclusive dreams.
These student-athletes headed to College Station to compete on college baseball’s biggest stage were high school students just like you: driven, goal-oriented and minds set on pursuing the highest level of both baseball and academics during their college career – we hope that their story can provide an example and some inspiration along your own journey.
WILL ROBERTSON – OF, Davidson Wildcats
School: Davidson, Class of 2017
Honor Roll Camp Attended: Long Island, 2011 & 2012
Bio: Robertson has been at the heart of the Wildcats run through the Atlantic-10 and regional tournaments. Originally promised only a fall roster spot his Freshman year, Will has continuously developed over his time at Davidson and become one of the most dynamic players in school history. In a 2017 season that has yet to conclude, the Wildcat right fielder has already set the program record for homeruns as well as compiled the longest hit streak in school history (20 games). His list off accolades continues to grow – first with his selection as First Team All-Atlantic 10 then most recently as a Collegiate Baseball Third Team All-American.
Off the field, Robertson graduated Cum Laude two weeks ago with a degree in Economics. While many scouts have tabbed him as a legitimate prospect for the upcoming draft – Robertson also has a job waiting for him as an Operations Analyst with multi-billion dollar marketing firm Red Ventures.
WESTIN WHITMIRE – RHP, Davidson Wildcats
School: Davidson, Class of 2017
Honor Roll Camps Attended: Long Island, 2012
Bio: An anchor of the Wildcats bullpen for the last 4 years, Whitmire set the Davidson record for saves in a single season earlier this year with 13 and has recorded some of the biggest outs in school history. His most recent save came in a matchup with 43 win Florida Gulf coast and secured Davidson’s appearance in the regional title game. He is second all-time in career appearances and sits just two shy of the career record for saves.
In the classroom, Whitmire has achieved parallel success graduating in May and gaining acceptance to the University of Texas’s Masters of Accounting Program. Upon completion of his Masters, Whitmire will accept a position as an Associate with top accounting firm Ernst & Young.
Eric Jones, C/3B
A sophomore from Jacksonville, FL, Jones attended Honor Roll Camp on Long Island in 2014 and has proved an excellent pick up for the Wildcats. A starter in both his first two season, Jones currently holds a career average of .315 with 11 career homeruns and was named to the All-Atlantic 10 Tournament Team this year following a 14-25 (.560 avg) performance.
Evan Roberts, LHP
The crafty lefty and Economics major from Newbury, MA attended 3 different Honor Roll Camps between 2012 and 2013. Of his 18, Roberts most recent is his most memorable: last week, the southpaw kept the powerful Florida Gulf Coast offense off-balance for 8 strong innings surrendering only a single run before giving way to fellow Headfirst alumni and closer Westin Whitmire who recorded the save and secured the win for Roberts & the Wildcats – sending them to the Regional final.
Justin Lebek, OF
The sophomore LF attended 2 Long Island sessions in 2014 and has been a pivotal contributor all season long for the Wildcats. Sidelined his freshman year to an injury, Lebek has bounced back strong for the Cats currently sporting a .298 batting average complimented by 7 homeruns and 43 RBI.
